Learning to sing great Jazz songs we all love: An afternoon workshop covering the basic techniques needed to sing jazz songs in an authentic jazz style … led by Lynne O’Neill and Jim Clelland.
Workshop Detail: Participants sing together well-known jazz standards and learn technique necessary to turn their singing into an authentic and exciting jazz performance!
Evening Concert: Workshop Participants showcase 3 songs worked on in the afternoon, covering Swing/Samba/Ballad … jazz rhythms to an audience of friends and family. Then a 45 Minute Set from Jazz Vocalist Lynne O’Neill and Jazz Pianist Jim Clelland. Lynne and Jim will perform a programme of well-known jazz standards covering a variety of styles and tempos.

2017 Vocal Jazz Workshop
A two day Workshop for music professionals, music directors and singers who wish to know more about the art of vocal jazz, how best to perform it and how to teach it. The Workshop covered:
The Art of Vocal Jazz: explore vocal jazz and experience factors that make artistic ensemble and solo singing possible – jazz style.
Vocal Jazz Literature: sing, rehearse and perform vocal jazz ensemble and solo literature.
Efficient and Educational Rehearsals: Improve conducting and rehearsal technique of participating educators by giving directors a chance to do something new and different from what they did in college. Rehearsal efficiency and problems directors encounter in the rehearsal will be discussed along with strategies for better rehearsals.
Solo Jazz Performance: Standards – the songs of Gershwin, Rodgers, Berlin, Kern, Porter, Jobim, Mercer, Carmichael and others are the foundation of jazz literature. Learning and performing this literature in an encouraging environment.
Vocal Improvisation – Scat singing: practice in improvisation and methods of teaching creativity.
Jazz Theory: looking at jazz theory, chords.
2016 Scat Singing Masterclass
Our Jazz Vocal workshop will be led by the Jazz Vocalist and Educator Elliot Murray and will cover an Introduction to Scat Singing plus a Masterclass. The workshop will be accompanied by our rhythm section – Jim Clelland on piano and Andy Mitchell on Bass guitar.
Elliot has appeared in many major concert halls all over the UK. He has directed and sung with the RSNO Big Band, BBC Big Band and has delivered vocal workshops for the last 25 years.
Scat Singing Basics: Look at the various techniques involved – words/sounds/articulation/phrasing… through group work and singing of well known jazz standards without words. Improvisation will not be used initially. The focus is on… HOW not WHAT to sing…
Masterclass : A few participants will be encouraged to sing a short section of a well known standard with the rhythm section and then be given some simple feedback on their performance. This will be an excellent opportunity for those looking to learn and understand more about jazz singing…
